WHAT WE DO:
Social Security is for people of all ages. It's more than a retirement program. Social Security also can provide benefits if you become disabled and help support your family after you die. Nearly 51 million Americans receive monthly Social Security benefits.
Social Security can provide information for the American public, organizations and employers through its Web site (www.socialsecurity.gov), its toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213, extensive publications and the public outreach efforts of public affairs specialists and staff in approximately 1300 community based offices throughout the country.

WHAT'S NEW:
Social Security also is announcing the solicitation of applications for a cooperative agreement to compete for a Financial Literacy Research Consortium (FLRC) to help inform the public about financial literacy and savings. The FLRC will be an innovative, non-partisan multidisciplinary research and development initiative to develop products to inform the public better about key financial literacy topics related to retirement savings and planning. SSA is interested in developing products-such as Internet tools as well as print materials-that help foster retirement and other savings strategies at all stages of the life cycle. The opening date of this announcement is the date of publication in the Federal Register, Wednesday, April 22, 2009. The closing date for receipt of cooperative agreement applications under this announcement is June 6, 2009.
In addition, Retire Online-It's So Easy! Social Security offers an improved online retirement application that can be completed in as little as 15 minutes. It's so easy! Better yet, individuals can apply from the comfort of their home or office at the most convenient time. There's no need to drive to a local Social Security office or wait for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
In most cases, once the application is submitted electronically, it's done. There are no forms to sign and usually no documentation is required. Social Security will process the application and contact the applicant if any further information is needed.
WHAT WE NEED:
Social Security is involved in a wide variety of new and important initiatives such as Retire Online - It's So Easy! SSA is asking national organizations throughout the country to partner with it to share information about these initiatives with their members by including an article in an electronic newsletter or linking to the Social Security Web site.
