American Bankers Association Education Foundation

The American Bankers Association Education Foundation's mission is to help bankers make their communities better through financial education. The foundation operates two, banker-driven, national education programs, Teach Children to Save and Get Smart About Credit. In 2010, the foundation launched a new initiative under the Teach Children to Save umbrella:  Lights, Camera, Save!  It also publishes The Spirit of Banking, a monthly e-newsletter about financial education and advocates for banker-delivered financial education, such as in-school banks.

Through its national programs, the ABA Education Foundation has helped a grassroots network of 123,689 dedicated banker volunteers teach personal finance skills to more than 5.2 million children and young adults.  Founded and funded by bankers more than 85 years ago, the foundation works closely with a board of bankers and is a non-profit subsidiary of the American Bankers Association.

Teach Children to Save is a national campaign that raises awareness about the important role that banks and bankers play in helping young people develop lifelong savings habits. Participating bankers trade in their balance sheets for black boards and teach students personal finance skills through activities, interactive scenarios and sharing real-life experiences. The lessons cover the basics of saving, how interest makes money grow, how to create a budget and how to distinguish needs from wants. Teach Children to Save efforts have reached 4.5 million young people throughout the U.S. and its territories, with the help of some 105,469 bankers through its annual awareness day and the Teach Children to Save Web site: www.TeachChildrenToSave.com.  Teach Children to Save will be held Tuesday, April 24 in 2012 and Tuesday, April 23 in 2013.

In celebration of the 15th annual Teach Children to Save Day, the ABA Education Foundation launched a new industry initiative to open 15,000 children’s savings accounts in 2011 known as the “Race to Save.” Parents interested in opening a children’s savings account can look for a bank in their area on the list of Race to Save Banks or the Teach Children to Save Honor Roll at www.TeachChildrenToSave.com.

Lights, Camera, Save! is a first-of-its-kind video contest designed to encourage young people to use the power of video to communicate to peers and others the value -- and understanding -- of saving. It is an offshoot of the foundation’s Teach Children to Save program. The inaugural winners can be viewed YouTube.com/TeachChildrenToSave.  In 2011, students can enter the contest by submitting their 60-90 second video to a local participating bank.  View the current list. The contest commences October 1, 2011.

Get Smart About Credit is national education program that helps bankers teach young adults the ABCs of wise credit use. Bankers go into classrooms, connect with youth groups, and visit college campuses to help young people learn how to budget, use credit responsibly and build a positive payment history. When young adults learn the dos and don'ts of credit early on, they are better prepared to make smart financial choices throughout their lives.  Addition information for consumers can be found at www.GetSmartAboutCredit.com.  Annually held on the third Thursday in October, the next Get Smart About Credit event takes place Thursday, October 20, 2011.
