American Bankruptcy Institute

The American Bankruptcy Institute is the largest multi-disciplinary, non-partisan and nonprofit organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency. ABI was founded in 1982 to provide Congress, journalists and the public with unbiased analysis of bankruptcy issues. The ABI membership includes almost 12,000 attorneys, bankers, judges, professors, lenders, turnaround specialists, accountants and other bankruptcy professionals providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information.

ABI can be found online at ABI World,, the most comprehensive site on matters related to insolvency. ABI also has a website that is purely dedicated to consumers interested in gaining knowledge about bankruptcy and alternatives to bankruptcy and to consumer bankruptcy professionals. The “for consumers” section of the Consumer Bankruptcy Center is a free service created to help those in the general public seeking information about bankruptcy, its terminology, the filing process and where to find local assistance. A consumer may go directly to this website at or link to it through the ABIWorld homepage.

ABI's Consumer Bankruptcy Center contains the most-commonly asked questions and answers by consumers about the bankruptcy process, resource links for consumers, news articles, podcasts, other online publications pertaining to issues related to filing for bankruptcy, links to approved credit counseling agencies, and a free online version of the Bankruptcy Code. If you're interested in seeking the help of an attorney near you, the Consumer Bankruptcy Center provides a list of all bankruptcy attorneys certified by the American Board of Certification.
