“Just as it was not possible to live in an industrialized society without print literacy - so it is not possible to live in today’s world without being financially literate. To fully participate in society today, financial literacy is critical…”

-Annamaria Lusardi, Denit Trust Professor of Economics and Accountancy at the George Washington University School of Business, and Director of the Financial Literacy Center

Current State

While some progress is being made in providing our youth with financial education, consider the following from recent studies:

  • IL is among 41 States with no formal requirements to assess students’ financial literacy.
  • Less than 20% of teachers believe they are adequately prepared to teach personal finance.
  • Students with savings accounts are approximately six times more likely to attend college.
  • Only 48.3% of high school seniors correctly answer questions on financial literacy.

Clearly, there remains plenty of work to be done to prepare our students and teachers to navigate the world of money and the behaviors that they will encounter.

Established in 2004 as an affiliate of the National Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, ILJC is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit corporation staffed and run by volunteers committed to promoting financial education.  We have no overhead expenses; so all contributions are directed to the programs supported by the organization. The following goals drive our mission:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of financial capability.
  • Energize new literacy advocates and encourage direct local action to improve financial education.
  • Support individuals, organizations and initiatives that advance youth financial education.
  • Be a trusted resource for financial education information in Illinois.

Your tax-deductible contribution will help support:

  • Educator Scholarships
  • Student Scholarships
  • Financial Education Library Grants
  • E-Newsletters on research, programs and events
  • Online Resource access for all stakeholders
  • Education & Networking Events each quarter
  • A new Preceptorship Program designed to raise awareness, energize literacy advocates, and promote local action to improve financial education
