Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards

WHAT WE DO:

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP Board) is non-profit, standards-setting organization with a mission to benefit the public by granting the CFP® certification and upholding it as a recognized standard of excellence for personal financial planning.

CFP Board sets and enforces education, examination, experience, and ethics standards for more than 61,000 CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals in the U.S who have met CFP Board's initial and ongoing certification requirements, and who have agreed to adhere to high standards of ethical conduct, including the fiduciary duty of care, which means that CFP® professionals are required to act in the consumers’ best interest.

CFP Board is dedicated to advancing consumer protection through rigorous enforcement of its ethical standards, and by providing resources and programs to educate consumers about the importance of financial planning to meet their life goals.

For more information on CFP Board and our ongoing initiatives, visit www.CFP.net.

WHAT WE OFFER:

CFP Board serves the public. We are advocates not just for competent and ethical financial planning, but for legislative and regulatory policies that provide consumer protections. We also have a series of initiatives underway that further our goal of benefiting the public and protecting the American consumer:

Financial Planning Days: In October we will hold a series of Financial Planning Day events in cities across the country in partnership with the Financial Planning Association, the Foundation for Financial Planning and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.  These events will deliver free financial advice to the public by uniting the collective resources of the financial planning community and city governments nationwide. More information about this exciting initiative, including the list of participating cities, is available at www.FinancialPlanningDays.org.

Consumer Advocate: With over 20 years of experience in the financial planning profession, CFP Board’s Consumer Advocate, Eleanor Blayney, CFP®, provides consumers with insights on personal finance issues and makes complex ideas and strategies accessible and understandable.  Through her regular media appearances, Eleanor speaks on the “bread and butter” personal finance topics of our time, and provides educational resources across multiple media platforms, such as the upcoming “Financial Tips for a Lifetime” initiative.  Learn more at www.CFP.net/advocate.

Grant Program: Since 2006, CFP Board has provided nearly $1.5 million in grant funding to selected non-profit organizations, educators and CFP® professionals involved in a wide variety of activities that provide underserved populations with access to competent and ethical financial planning.  For more information on CFP Board’s grant program, visit www.CFP.net/grants.

WHAT WE NEED:

In a word: partners. CFP Board is a proactive and energetic organization looking for those organizations that can work with us to achieve the goal of having Americans reach their life goals though competent and ethical financial planning.  Financial planning is for everyone; not just the wealthy. It’s also not solely focused on investments, but everything from cash flow to budgeting to debt management, and of course, retirement and education planning.  Our work benefits greatly from the contributions of other organizations, and there are many opportunities to become involved with CFP Board in meaningful and rewarding ways.

WHAT’S NEW:

This year marks CFP Board’s 25th anniversary as an organization. The financial planning profession has seen incredible growth during CFP Board’s first quarter century, with many significant accomplishments along the way. But the success and increasing public recognition of the CFP® marks isn’t something CFP Board accomplished alone. We’ve made it to this point with the help of the entire CFP® certificant community and the many individuals and organizations who have supported the CFP® certification. And we will be able to make the most of the opportunities approaching us only with your ongoing support.
