 ICI Education Foundation

Investment Company Institute Education Foundation

WHAT WE DO:

ICIEF is the Education Foundation of the Investment Company Institute, the national association of mutual funds and other investment companies. Since 1989, ICIEF has developed and delivered investment education programs in partnership with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, American University, National Urban League, Hispanic College Fund, and the SIFMA Foundation for Investor Education, among other organizations. ICIEF also participates in a variety of financial education advocacy coalitions, conferences, and initiatives that promote saving and investing education nationwide, including the Jump$tart Coalition® and Greater Washington Jump$tart.

WHAT WE OFFER:

Currently, ICIEF offers microgrants—up to $25,000 each—to schools and other not-for-profit organizations to incorporate investor education into existing financial education courses, programs, or activities within the greater metropolitan Washington, DC area. (The grantee may be located outside the Washington, DC region provided the investor education takes place within the region.) We have chosen to pilot this program in our nation’s capital, where we are located.

WHAT WE NEED:

We are looking for best practices in investor education—innovative, hands-on efforts that not only build knowledge, but change attitudes, create confidence, or influence behavior as well. We accept grant applications continuously and review them quarterly. For more information, please visit www.icief.org.

WHAT’S NEW:

ICIEF will soon be announcing a new grant to the University of Maryland to develop and deliver a series of retirement investing workshops for university faculty and staff. Since we launched the microgrant program a year ago, grants have been awarded to:

  • Arlington County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension to organize four five-week series of investment lessons for adults at Northern Virginia libraries and for students at four Northern Virginia middle schools,
  • Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area to sponsor an investment storefront within Finance Park (currently under construction) where all Fairfax County 8th graders will set budgets for investing  as part of a personal finance simulation,
  • SIFMA Foundation to conduct two professional development days for Washington, DC school teachers, including a personal investing component as well as instruction on how to implement the Stock Market Game Program in the classroom, with implementation followup,
  • STRIVE DC to incorporate retirement investing education into job training and placement programs for unemployed DC residents, and
  • UNCF (the United Negro College Fund) to develop, in partnership with EverFi (a turnkey personal finance online platform), a Financial Scholars program in five Prince George’s County, MD high schools.
