WHO WE ARE:
The mission of the Maine Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy is to improve the financial knowledge of Maine citizens, with a special focus on pre-K through college students, including adult learners. Working collaboratively, the Coalition seeks to increase awareness and provide training and support to Maine educators while also promoting educational resources and fostering communication among agencies and individuals who provide financial education to Maine families.
Our members are individuals and organizations who recognize and support the lifetime benefits of personal financial education, including government agencies, financial institutions, corporations, teachers, guidance counselors, school administrators, adult educators, not-for-profits, parents and students.
The Maine Jump$tart Coalition is a proud affiliate of the National Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy®.
WHAT WE OFFER:
Each year, Maine Jump$tart and its partners host the Annual Fostering Financial Education in Maine Schools Conference. In its fifth year, this award-winning conference was developed for teachers, school counselors, and community educators who are interested in improving the financial capability of Maine students and young adults. The conference features FREE financial education resources for K-12 and college-age students, and a variety of workshops presented by classroom teachers and financial literacy experts. Fee waivers and financial support for substitute teacher expenses are available.
Maine Jump$tart Coalition Financial Educator of the Year Award
This award was created to recognize a Maine educator who has distinguished themselves through their efforts to improve the financial capability of the students and families they serve. A $1,000 travel stipend is awarded to attend the National Jump$tart Educator Conference.
Maine Jump$tart Webinars
This training series was created to highlight the work of coalition partners. Recordings of each webinar are available on the Maine Jump$tart website.
Maine-based Financial Education Services Clearinghouse
Maine Jump$tart assisted in the development of a statewide financial education clearinghouse to help educators and community members locate statewide financial educational resources. Since November, 262 individuals have accessed the clearinghouse.
Maine LifeSmarts Program
The LifeSmarts program is a national program designed to help high school students sharpen their knowledge of personal finance and consumer rights and other life skills. Online competition between Maine high school teams takes place through the fall and winter and culminates with a state final competition in March. Through a generous sponsorship from Maine Bankers Association, this year’s winning team received an all-expense paid trip to the 2014 National LifeSmarts competition.
WHAT WE NEED:
Join us in supporting Maine teachers as they work to expand financial education in the classroom. There are numerous ways to support the Coalition. Become a partner, sponsor a teacher, or volunteer at one of our events. Each January, we host an annual meeting for Coalition partners – we encourage you to attend and learn more!
In 2012, Maine Jump$tart began working in partnership with The United Way of Greater Portland, Unum, the Finance Authority of Maine, and several other individuals and organizations. The goal of this important collaboration is to develop a Collective Impact approach for improving financial capability in Maine. Project goals include creation of a common vision and mutually reinforcing activities, and development of a shared measurement system.
