MasterCard Worldwide

MasterCard is committed to financial education.  That’s why we’ve created a range of tailored financial education programs in nearly 50 markets around the world–from smart money management for young adults; to security for cardholders and their banks; to budget management for the unbanked and underbanked. Each of these programs is designed to be a catalyst for financial inclusion,  and are delivered in an interactive, personal and engaging way—whether it’s through an online portal, new mobile technology or hands-on in the community.

In the US, MasterCard offers a robust financial education program in addition to its support of Jump$tart Coalition.

Some examples include:

Are You Credit Wise?

With the support of national student leaders, MasterCard Worldwide developed Are You Credit Wise?, a campus-based education program that provides money management information to college students.   The program is designed to train students to help their peers understand key financial concepts – including budgeting, bill payment, responsible use of payment cards and building a credit history.  It has reached students at nearly 80 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, and in 2010 was launched in the Netherlands.

Are You Credit Wise? recruits and trains student interns to lead campus-wide education campaigns focused on the fundamentals of good credit habits.  Activities in which MasterCard interns have launched on college campuses across the country include:

  • Hosting school wide intern-led presentations on money management;
  • Organizing and officially designating an Are You Credit Wise? week during the semester;
  • Sponsoring workshops in residence halls or as part of orientation programs; and
  • Providing consumer education materials to the student body.

Everyday Prepaid

To help un-banked and under-banked Americans learn how to save money and manage finances, the Everyday Prepaid Campaign shares saving tips and budgeting tools.   Program activities and outreach include:

  • Partnerships with local organizations to deliver seminars on financial management and provide budget workbooks and other materials to help people better manage their finances;
  • Theater-style presentations on general financial management given in local communities by MasterCard and a financial expert; and
  • A six-volume set of brochures provided to card issuers who share the materials (available in English and Spanish) with their customers.
