NFCC 60

National Foundation for Credit Counseling

WHO WE ARE:

Founded in 1951, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, Inc.® (NFCC) promotes the national agenda for financially responsible behavior and builds capacity for its members to deliver the highest quality financial education and counseling services. As the nation’s largest and longest serving nonprofit credit counseling organization, the NFCC has played the key role in providing financial counseling and education to consumers for more than 60 years. With almost 100 member agencies and 800 offices throughout the country, the NFCC is the national voice for its members, which are nonprofit, mission driven, community-based agencies.

WHAT WE OFFER:

Each year, more than three million people receive counseling and educational services from NFCC member agencies. Over one-third of all consumers who come to an NFCC agency for counseling are able to manage their debt on their own after receiving financial education and counseling.

NFCC Member Agencies provide a variety of services including:

  • Budget counseling and education
  • Counseling referral services
  • Housing counseling
  • Debt management plans
  • Financial literacy courses
  • Bankruptcy counseling and education

WHAT WE NEED:

We would like to encourage anyone who is interested to get involved with Protect Your Identity Week to learn more by visiting www.protectyouridnow.org. If you are interested in hosting or co-hosting an event during Protect Your Identity Week 2011, contact Gail Cunningham .for more information.

WHAT’S NEW:

The NFCC has teamed up with the National Sheriffs’ Association and the National Association of Triads for their fourth annual Protect Your Identity Week from October 16 to October 22, 2011.

  • Child ID Theft
This year a special emphasis is being placed on the dangers of child ID theft. According to a study conducted by AllClear ID, children may be 51 times more likely than adults to have their identity stolen. Children’s social security numbers are especially valuable to thieves because they can be paired with any name and birth date. Since parents are less likely to monitor their children’s identities, the probability of discovery is low. This could potentially damage the child’s future ability to be approved for student loans, obtain a job or secure a place to live.
  • Paper Shredding
For the second year, Cintas is the national shredding sponsor for Protect Your Identity Week, and will provide free shredding opportunities for consumers attending PYIW events. Last year, the NFCC and Cintas worked together with consumers to shred over 882 tons of material. They also set a new Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period, collecting over 15.99 tons.
  • Cell Phone Recycling
911 Cell Phone Bank, a nonprofit cell phone recycling company, will be assisting with the collection of old cell phones this year. After being wiped clean of personal information, these cell phones will be re-distributed to the Sheriffs’ Association in the communities from which they came. The Sheriffs’ will then redistribute the phones to meet the needs of affiliated victim services agencies.
