Champlain Valley Union High School Crowned Vermont LifeSmarts State Champions!

CVU FBLA from Champlain Valley Union High School have done it again! They won the 4th Annual Vermont State Competition on Feb. 7 in Montpelier, their third win in a row, competing against five other teams from around Vermont. The five young men on the team include Chris Petrillo (captain), Graham Hulvey, Roshi Brooklyn, Sam Giles, and Devon Cantor. They are coached by teachers Tamie-Jo Dickinson and Colleen Wedge. CVU FBLA will represent Vermont at the national LifeSmarts competition April 20-23 in Atlanta, Georgia, where they will compete against teams from across the United States.

The LR Rangers from Lake Region Union High School placed second. Coached by teachers Elaine French and Betsy Calhoun, the team includes Devin Royer (captain), Sarah Carpenter, Gratia Rowell, Zeb McCoy, and Jade Jarvis. The LR Rangers were tough competitors as they squared off against CVU FBLA during the final championship round. If the team from Champlain Valley Union High School cannot compete, the LR Rangers will represent Vermont in Atlanta.

From September 2012 through February 2013, high school students from around Vermont competed in the 4th Annual LifeSmarts...The Ultimate Consumer Challenge. They first competed online for the six spots in the state competition. The teams that won that honor included:

  1. CVU FBLA (Champlain Valley Union HS), coached by Tamie-Jo Dickinson and Colleen Wedge
  2. Financial Femmes (Canaan Memorial HS), coached by Lois Little and Melissa Gray
  3. GMTCC (Green Mountain Technology and Career Center), coached Lisa Durocher and Brian Schwartz
  4. LR Rangers (Lake Region Union HS), coached by Elaine French and Betsy Calhoun
  5. BFA 3 (Bellows Free Academy), coached by John Tague
  6. North Country Falcons (North Country Career Center), coached by Nancy McDermott

LifeSmarts is an educational program that develops the consumer and marketplace skills of high school students in a fun way and rewards them for the knowledge they gain. The program complements any high school curriculum and can be used as an activity for classes, groups, clubs and community organizations. LifeSmarts is free to coaches and students.

LifeSmarts is run as a game show style competition and in Vermont is open to teens in grades 9-12. All LifeSmarts quizzes, games and resources are available to everyone, and we encourage teachers and youth leaders to use them to complement their classroom coursework, whether they compete or not. LifeSmarts tests students' consumer knowledge in five areas: personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology and consumer rights and responsibilities. Anyone can take the practice quiz and test their LifeSmarts.

For the the fourth year, Vermont Jump$tart is proud to coordinate the Vermont LifeSmarts competition. LifeSmarts is owned and operated by the National Consumers League and coordination is provided at the state level in partnership with other non-profit organizations and agencies. Helpful Financial Literacy Websites

Our VT Jump$tart Education Committee has been working hard to seek out some of the best financial literacy websites out there in cyberspace. Take a look at what they've discovered!

Speakers Bureau

VT Jump$tart continues to work with teachers and groups interested in inviting a guest speaker to make a presentation on a financial topic. However, our Speakers Bureau has lost its volunteer coordinator, so we will try to field requests as best we can. We ask for your patience as try to fill specific requests.
