Take Charge America Institute

WHAT WE DO:

Since 2003, the Take Charge America Institute for Consumer Financial Education and Research (TCAI) at The University of Arizona has worked to create research-based educational outreach programs that improve the money-management skills and financial confidence of youth and young adults.

TCAI works with a national network of scholars to incorporate the latest insights about consumer financial decision making into all of our programs. Our most prominent current research initiative is the Arizona Pathways to Life Success in University Students (APLUS) longitudinal survey, which is helping researchers to understand how young adults acquire positive financial attitudes and behaviors.

WHAT WE OFFER:

We directly impact 600,000+ young adults annually through our high school/middle school financial education programs. TCAI’s unique collaboration model allows us to work with teachers, and financial education leaders at the local, state, and national levels through a variety of programs.

  • Family Economics & Financial Education (FEFE)–The FEFE program is the Institute’s award-winning, free, downloadable financial education curriculum used by more than 24,000 educators nationwide. FEFE’s materials are written and continuously updated “by educators...for educators” through an innovative partnership with teachers and schools.  In addition to an activity-based curriculum, we offer an extensive professional development program including educator trainings tailored to state mandates or needs.
  • Credit-Wise Cats–We engage youth in the greater Tucson community by training a group of University of Arizona students to conduct personal finance workshops for high school and college students and sponsor local competitions.
  • Office of Economic Education–The OEE program organizes teacher training events, workshops and summer courses for graduate-level credit to prepare teachers to teach economics in grades K-12. A new Masters in Economics Education degree program is coming in 2011.

WHAT WE NEED

Teachers and schools partner with us to deliver curriculum to students. Corporate and foundation partners support specific research projects and teacher training events.

We are looking for…

  • Local school districts and state education departments who seek an award-winning curriculum resource to use in their schools, free of charge, in order to teach personal finance and a companion program to provide professional development training for their teachers.
  • Private sector sponsors interested in underwriting professional development workshops for teachers to raise their skills in teaching personal finance.
  • Individual and organizational partners to help underwrite research and curriculum development.

Be a part of our proven success…

  • We reach more than 600,000 high school and middle school students with our curriculum each year across all 50 states.
  • To date, more than 8,000 classroom educators have participated in one of FEFE’s trainings.
  • More than 14,000 Tucson-area youth have been impacted by a Credit-Wise Cats workshop.

WHAT’S NEW:

  • A new, youth-oriented Web site is currently under construction and scheduled to launch in late spring 2011. This website will enhance the content of our FEFE program for teachers and students in the classroom. And, the site’s design will also encourage independent, experiential learning for students to access financial information and tools independent of a classroom, creating a long-term resource for young adults beyond high school.
  • The 10th Annual FEFE National Training conference will be held June 27-30, 2011 at the Omni Tucson National Resort. This 4-day event provides teachers with interactive workshops led by current classroom educators while offering networking opportunities for discussing best practices.
