The My Classroom Economy program offers a way to teach young people not only the concept of financial discipline but also--very importantly--the rewards that go with it. The program helps students learn the benefits of budgeting, saving, ownership, delayed gratification, organization, and responsibillity through hands-on experience and while having fun. Vaguard partnered with Rafe Esquith, an award-winning teacher who has incorproated a student-run economy into his 5th grade classroom for years. Vanguard has build upon his ideas so they could be used by educators across grades K through 12 and created an online training program for teachers to make implementation of a classroom economy easier. We know that the more help we can provide to educators, the more they can do to teach children financial skills that can last a lifetime.
Vanguard employees were invited to donate their time and expertise to the project and have done so enthusiastically. As a result, we are able to offer program guides and supporting materials to any teacher who wants to try this method of classroom management, and to help his or her students learn the benefits of financial responsibility by experiencing it firsthand.
The My Classroom Economy program offers virtually everything an educator needs in order to implement their own mini-economic system in their schol classroom. Program guides, program materials, videos to help bring key classroom events like pay day and auctions bring the economy to life for both the teacher and the student. All matierials are available free of charge and can be downloaded directly from the website www.myclassroomeconomy.org. Materials such as classroom money, checks, and fine tickets can then be copies by the teacher for use at school. For educators at schools where the ability to print and copy may be llimited, materials can be requested directly from the site and will be mailed, free of charge.
