Working in Support of Education

WHAT WE DO:
Working in Support of Education (w!se), a New York City based not-for-profit, offers innovative and award-winning programs that overcome two educational needs: financial literacy and preparedness for college and careers.  We serve secondary school teachers and students as well as at-risk adults nationwide, with an emphasis on reaching disadvantaged, underserved and under-resourced diverse communities.  Separately, w!se manages the New York Financial Literacy Coalition, the New York State affiliate for the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.

WHAT WE OFFER:
At the heart of w!se’s program offerings is a family of financial literacy initiatives. Our award winning Financial Literacy Certification program helps teachers develop personal finance knowledge and enables their students to live a life of financial wellbeing; our Certification in Personal Finance strengthens educators’ credentials to teach personal finance.

Financial Literacy Certification
Through this groundbreaking program, launched in 2003, w!se provides schools with the instructional resources they need to teach a course or unit on personal finance that culminates in the administration of our nationally standardized Financial Literacy Certification Test to measure student knowledge and the impact of instruction on financial behavior. Students passing the Test become Certified Financially Literate™, earning w!se’s CFL™, while teachers and schools are recognized based on student performance on the Test.

Now in 30 states, the program has been widely recognized for its success, including the US Treasury Department’s John Sherman Award for Excellence in Financial Education.

Educators can also earn a Certification in Personal Finance by taking and passing w!se’s rigorous, national Certification in Personal Finance Test.  Data shows that students taught by w!se Certified teachers earn higher scores on the Financial Literacy Certification Test.

WHAT WE NEED:
We welcome your support to expand our national presence and increase awareness of the w!se Financial Literacy Certification program to address the growing and urgent need for personal finance education.  Please contact us to find out how you can help.

WHAT’S NEW:
100 Best w!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance
In 2013, w!se celebrated the 10th Anniversary of their Financial Literacy Certification program by introducing the 100 Best w!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance.  This national ranking, the first of its kind, recognizes the top performing schools in w!se’s national network and encourages school districts and administrators to expand personal finance instruction and elevate the importance of financial education.  The ranking will be published annually, giving all schools that participate in the Financial Literacy Certification Program an opportunity to earn a place on it each year.  This year’s announcement will be on April 7 at a ceremony hosted by NYSE Euronext.

w!se’s Innovative use of Technology
We now offer our Financial Literacy Certification Test on Apple iPad and iPad Mini tablets. This is the latest example of how w!se is leveraging technology to support efficient program delivery. In addition to online testing, w!se hosts monthly professional development webinars throughout the school year, provides access to a resource library containing online lesson plans and other instructional tools and recently launched a personal finance blog with newsworthy articles and stories about personal finance.
