WASHINGTON, DC – March 5, 2020. The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy today announced that its 2020 William E. Odom Visionary Leadership Award will be presented to retired Bankruptcy Judge John Ninfo at the coalition’s annual awards dinner in Washington, DC in April. Judge Ninfo will accept the award before of an audience of financial literacy leaders from across the country. Other honorees will be announced separately.

Judge John Ninfo founded the Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE) Program in 2002, a personal finance education outreach program that sends bankruptcy professionals to middle schools, high schools, colleges and other organizations, to share their unique knowledge and perspective, and to provide lessons, tactics and techniques that will help these students lead financially responsible, debt-free lives.

Seeing too many young people buried in debt, Judge Ninfo was inspired to use his personal network as the launchpad for what would become his contribution to Jump$tart’s mission of “financial smarts for students.” He sought out the help of other judges, attorneys and court officials in a grassroots effort to reach, and positively influence students in schools. Today, there are more than 1,000 volunteer CARE presenters who are committed to Judge Ninfo’s vision and changing the financial trajectory of student’s lives.

“I am honored, to receive this prestigious award from the Coalition, which has been ‘the undisputed leader’ in promoting financial literacy. It is humbling to be included among the many giants in the financial education field who have received this leadership award,” proclaimed Judge Ninfo.

“I was fortunate to have met Judge Ninfo in my early years with Jump$tart and was so taken with his personal commitment to keeping young consumers out of his bankruptcy court,” said Laura Levine, President and CEO of the Jump$tart Coalition. “The ongoing success of the CARE organization is a long-lasting tribute to his vision and the many students reached through CARE presentations are a fitting legacy.”

The William E. Odom Visionary Leadership Award was first presented in 1999 to Bill Odom, former Chair of the Ford Motor Credit Company, whose vision led to
the creation of the Jump$tart Coalition. Mr. Odom remains an emeritus director of the Jump$tart Coalition Board. The award recognizes the significance of the honoree’s contribution to financial education and how his leadership and vision has altered the landscape of the financial literacy effort.

This year, the Jump$tart Annual Awards Dinner will be held Wednesday, April 22 at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel. It is the pinnacle event of FinFest, Jump$tart’s annual Financial Literacy Month celebration. The theme of the 2020 dinner is “From the Ground Up,” recognizing the organization’s upcoming 25th anniversary.
