Financial Literacy Day on Capitol Hill moves to June
Popular Event will Spotlight Financial Education in Schools
The 17th annual Financial Literacy Day on Capitol Hill (Hill Day, #FLHD19) is set for Wednesday, June 26, from noon to 3 p.m. in rooms 2043-2045 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Organized by the Jump$tart Coalition on behalf of its partners, with U.S. Reps. Joyce Beatty (D-OH-3) and Steve Stivers (R-OH-15) serving as honorary co-hosts, the event is free and open to the public.
Hill Day raises awareness about the importance of financial literacy, the need for effective financial education, and the array of initiatives that are now addressing the issue. It features a short program, a buffet lunch, and table-top exhibits from more than 50 organizations—from the business, finance, academic, education, non-profit and government sectors—showcasing the financial education products, programs, and information they offer.
Traditionally held during Financial Literacy Month in April, the 2019 Hill Day will be held in June, as most area schools break for summer vacation.
“Many educators use their summers to plan for the school year ahead,” said Jump$tart Coalition President and CEO Laura Levine. “Having Hill Day at the end of June will enable more teachers and administrators to join us, to learn about the wonderful classroom resources that our partners offer. We look forward to meeting these educators, as well as the Capitol Hill community, and all champions of the financial literacy effort.”
The timing supports Jump$tart’s Project Groundswell initiative, designed to increase and improve financial education in our nation’s schools, and Check Your School, the public-engagement campaign that advances the goals of Project Groundswell. The 2019 Hill Day event will focus on classroom resources and school-based initiatives; however, as always, exhibits will include a wide-range of financial literacy initiatives.
Sponsors of Hill Day 2019 include (to date): the Bank of China, GM Financial, Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation, and the National Credit Union Administration. Hill Day Background
Financial Literacy Day on Capitol Hill was introduced in 2003 by the Council for Economic Education, Junior Achievement, and the Jump$tart Coalition, with the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka serving as the original honorary co-host. Jump$tart has since taken over the event on its own, with Levine having served as emcee since 2005. Hill Day has been held on both the House and Senate sides of the Hill, with leadership from the House and Senate Financial Literacy Caucuses as featured presenters.
Over the years, Hill Day has evolved from a small gathering to a public event that attracts hundreds of participants. Many of the 300-500 attendees are Congressional staff members who follow financial literacy, financial access, education and related issues for U.S. Senators and Representatives. Others represent organizations and agencies that actively support financial literacy/capability.
