Funding the Future Adds Rock-n-Roll to Financial Literacy; Earns Jump$tart Coalition Innovation Award
The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy will honor Funding the Future for its innovative approach of using a live rock concert to get students to pay attention to a straight-from-the-heart personal finance lesson that follows.
The award will be presented at Jump$tart’s 2018 Annual Awards Dinner, which recognizes accomplishments of individuals and organizations that are working to create a financially literate future. The event takes place April 10 at the JW Marriott Washington, DC and is a central event during Jump$tart’s Financial Literacy Month (#FLM18) celebrations. (More information at jumpstart.org/awards18)
Funding the Future, a nonprofit organization and Jump$tart Coalition national partner, presents a concert by the rock band GOODING to get students dancing and singing before turning the lights back on for a multimedia lesson in personal finance. (They’ve also recently added one hip-hop/rap duo and one rock/country artist to the musical line-up.)
Band members cover the importance of developing good saving habits early, wise use of credit, the dangers of too much debt, how credit scores work, and how to control spending through tracking, budgeting and goal setting.
“We’ve all seen them—the teenagers who roll their eyes and tune out on information that could really do them some good,” said Laura Levine, Jump$tart Coalition President and CEO. “But with an energetic live concert followed by financial words of wisdom from some pretty cool musicians, Funding the Future has given financial education a fighting chance with its toughest crowd.”
Funding the Future Executive Director Lynn Hattery will be on hand to accept Jump$tart’s Innovation award, which was introduced in 2016 to honor creative efforts to reach the next generation of consumers.
“Funding the Future is thrilled to receive Jump$tart’s Innovation Award! We value the support of the coalition and its collaborative members across the country. By working together, we’re able to combine music with the message and create a movement,” said Hattery.
