A Groundswell of Support

In 2018, the Jump$tart Coalition introduced Project Groundswell, a new initiative designed to increase financial education in schools across the country through a “groundswell” of support from parents, teachers, and others.

The goals of Project Groundswell include a 25 percent increase in effective classroom-based financial education by the end of 2025—coinciding with Jump$tart’s 30th anniversary—and a commitment to keep going until personal finance is taught in every school.   A supporting goal is a 25 percent increase in professional development for teachers.

Check Your School

In 2019, Jump$tart launched Check Your School, a public-engagement campaign designed to support the goals of Project Groundswell.   The website features a searchable database where you can “check your school,” then “check at your school” and share what you know.

Unique Elements

While advocating for financial education is nothing new to Jump$tart, Project Groundswell and Check Your School emphasize effectiveness in financial education and a role to play for everyone.

  • The campaign targets public, private, and charter schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
  • Toolkits are tailored to parents/family members, educators and administrators, students, and Jump$tart’s own Partners and State Affiliates.
  • Schools are directed to the classroom resources and teacher training programs offered by our partners, affiliates and others, reinforcing an environment of mutual support.
  • And, the campaign promotes quality and accountability through the Essential Elements of Effective Finance Education, found on the CheckYourSchool.org site.

Tracking Progress

The National Endowment for Financial Education recently completed a sample survey of financial education in school districts across the country to establish a baseline for measuring the success of the Check Your School campaign.   Jump$tart thanks NEFE—a founding partner of the coalition—for its expertise and generosity in providing the benchmark survey as a gift in kind.
