Oct. 1-7 is World Investor Week 2019– a global campaign promoted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) to raise awareness of the importance of investor education and protection. As the U.S. national coordinator for World Investor Week, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is working with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and other supporters to promote World Investor Week and its goals in the United States.
World Investor Week is a great reminder that it’s never too early for students to start thinking about and preparing for their financial future!
WHAT’S NEW
SEC Chairman Jay Clayton shares his personal take on the basic investing concepts everyone should know in these videos:
WHAT WE OFFER
For students
These important World Investor Week concepts and SEC resources can help students get started on the path to a strong financial future.
- Compound Interest: Thanks to compound interest, even a small amount saved can add up to big money over time – so the earlier you start, the more time you give your money to work for you! Watch the SEC’s “What’s compound interest?” public service campaign video, and then use the SEC’s Compound Interest Calculator at Investor.gov to find out how the money you save can grow over time.
- Plan for Your Goals: You probably already have many financial goals you hope to achieve someday, like starting your own business or going to college. A concrete plan can help keep you on track! Ask yourself what goals you want to achieve, write them down, then use the SEC’s Savings Goal Calculator at Investor.gov to calculate how much money you’d need to save each month to meet those goals.
- Diversification: Diversificati
on is a strategy that can neatly be summed up as “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” All investments have some risk, but that risk can be heightened when you invest in only one investment or one kind of investment. One way to minimize risk is to spread your money among different investments in the hope that if one goes down in value, the others will make up for those losses.
For teachers
Teachers, you work hard educating our future generations. World Investor Week is a great reminder to think about your own financial future, too! The SEC’s Saving and Investing Resources for Teachers page on Investor.gov features information, resources, and tools to help you become a smarter investor and better plan for your retirement. We also have a guide just for teachers, Saving and Investing for K-12 Educators.
